Gods and men formed a single society in The Iliad
Do you agree that Gods and men formed a single society in
The Iliad? If so show how?
Ans. Indeed gods and men formed one single society in The Iliad.
There is no existence of any particular religion. The primitive religion that
we come to know about is actually the religion of the heroes and princes. Many
of the heroes claimed their descent from Olympians. They were often equal in
power and strength with gods. Achilles draws his sword and was about to strike
Agamemnon. Goddess Athene intervened just in time. But he was in a defiant mood
even before the goddess.
Gods were offended only when men were oblivious of their
mortality. Gods are immortal and men are mortal-that is the only dividing line
between the two. This only privilege that gods often exercise to be cruel to
the mortals. Although gods behaved like men they wielded much greater power
than their human counterparts. Despite this difference at times friendship
existed between god and men.
