Under what
one restriction does a poet write?
Ans.
According to Wordsworth, poets write poems to give immediate pleasure to his
readers. A poet must give pleasure to his readers by his poems. In order to
enjoy the pleasure of poetry, a reader does not need the knowledge of a
specialist. The reader is not expected to posses the kind of knowledge which a
lawyer or a physician or a sailor or an astronomer or a natural philosopher
possesses. A human being, possessing ordinary knowledge which any man is
expected to have is capable of enjoying poetry because the poet does not write
for specialists. In other words, a reader need not possess any specialist
knowledge in order to derive pleasure from poetry. Thus, the poet writes under
one restriction only, that is, the necessity of giving immediate pleasure to
his readers without possessing specialised knowledge.
